What Are Dental Implants?

Losing teeth can significantly affect your ability to bite and chew comfortably, straining adjacent teeth and leading to further issues. Dental implants offer a lasting solution by mimicking natural teeth in look, feel, and function. A surgically placed post fuses with the jawbone, supporting a secure restoration like a crown or bridge. This approach ensures durability, aesthetics, and long-term success. At Point Meadows Dentistry, our dental implant specialist provides expert care and delivers top-quality implant solutions.

Are Dental Implants Better Than Dental Bridges?

Modern dental implants have success rates exceeding 95% and have several benefits over traditional treatments such as dental bridges. With a bridge, your dentist shaves down teeth next to your missing tooth to create space for the restoration.

In addition to removing perfectly good tooth structure, shaving teeth down for a bridge may irritate the nerves of the teeth, leading to future root canals. With dental implants, the teeth next to the missing tooth are not touched. This eliminates unnecessary trauma to the adjacent teeth and the possible need for expensive and painful root canals.

Meet Dr. Hanna Mularkey

“My path to dentistry started unexpectedly—as a patient. While visiting the UNC Dental School for research follow-ups after receiving a dental implant, I witnessed the life-changing impact of dentistry firsthand. That experience inspired me to become a research assistant and pursue externships at the W.G. Hefner VA Medical Center and St. Mary’s Health Center, where I developed a deep appreciation for patient-centered care.

From the beginning, I’ve believed dentistry should be about people, not production. That’s why I’ve dedicated hundreds of hours to volunteer work—from North Carolina’s Mission of Mercy clinics to the North East Florida Baptist Association’s mobile dental unit—because everyone deserves compassionate, quality care.

Here at Point Meadows Dentistry, we’re proud to remain a locally owned practice that values trust, connection, and community. I’m honored to care for Jacksonville families and to help patients rediscover confidence through personalized, honest dentistry that truly makes a difference.”

Meet Dr. Sarah Danser

Dentistry, to me, is where science, medicine, and art come together to make a real difference in people’s lives. Every smile I create reflects both precision and creativity—and every patient I meet reminds me why I chose this profession. I want my patients to feel completely confident in my care, knowing they’re being treated by someone who values honesty, accountability, and trust above all else.

At Point Meadows Dentistry, we’re proud to be part of a locally owned practice where relationships matter more than numbers. We take time to truly listen, explain, and connect, so each patient feels seen, heard, and cared for. Whether it’s restoring health, enhancing confidence, or maintaining long-term wellness, I approach every treatment with the same dedication I would for my own family.

My goal is simple: to help patients feel comfortable, cared for, and proud of their smile—because the best dental care comes from genuine connection and compassion.”

How Can We Can Help You Enhance Your Smile?

Answer these short questions and learn everything you need to know

What To Expect From Your Dental Implant Procedure

Your journey begins with a consultation with your implant dentist in Jacksonville. During this visit, our dentists will evaluate your oral health and determine if any preliminary treatments are needed. If issues like tooth decay, gum disease, or jawbone loss are present, treatments such as periodontal therapy, bone grafting, sinus lifts, or tooth extractions may be recommended. These steps help create the best foundation for the success of your dental implants.

On the day of your surgery, we will use local anesthesia to ensure your comfort. Small incisions will be made in your gums, and each implant will be carefully placed into the jawbone using advanced technology to ensure accuracy and reduce risks. After placing the implants, we will close the gum tissue and cover the implants with protective healing caps.

After surgery, you will go home to heal for 3-6 months. During this time, a process called osseointegration occurs, where the bone fuses with the implants to create a strong, stable foundation for your new teeth. Following your dentist’s guidelines during recovery is essential to ensure a successful outcome.

Once healing is complete and osseointegration is successful, you will return for a small follow-up procedure. We’ll place metal abutments on top of the implants. These connectors will secure your custom restoration to the implants, preparing your smile for the final step.

The last step is to attach your custom dental restoration, such as a crown, bridge, or denture, to the abutments. These restorations are made from high-quality materials designed to look and feel natural, blending seamlessly with your smile. With proper care, your new teeth can last 30+ years, giving you a durable and confident smile.
